Four & Half Tatami From Anime Inspiration to Generative Architecture: Modeling Cultural Space with Code
SOFTWARE: Rhino (visualization) + Grasshopper (number slider control) + Python (Brep ops, intersection tests, data trees).
Four & Half Tatami is a generative design system inspired by the ending sequence “God is Correct” (神様のいうとおり) from The Tatami Galaxy (四畳半神話大系). It recreates the hypnotic rhythm of rooms growing and reorganizing by encoding tatami traditions, spatial rules, and door behavior into a reproducible algorithm. The result is a living set of plans that feel both systematic and human.
The project merges cultural patterning with procedural geometry. It translates tacit rules—like avoiding cross joints or short-edge doors—into code, then uses those rules to produce varied, believable interiors suitable for visualization or fabrication.
